A student gateway into the Texas energy ecosystem

Open to undergraduate and graduate students from all majors at UT Austin. No membership requirements.

  • The Longhorn Energy Club (LEC) is the social hub for all things energy at the University of Texas at Austin. Open to undergraduate and graduate students from all university programs, our organization is focused on fostering connections between students and professionals for career development, academic collaborations, and interdisciplinary learning. We believe that the multifaceted nature of our global energy challenges demands cooperation across disciplines and technologies.

Based in the capital of Texas, we operate in close partnership with major stakeholders at the university, in government, and in industry. Our events highlight the leading role of Texas in advancing today’s energy systems and aim to prepare our members with well rounded perspectives on the energy sector, serving as a pipeline for students to become knowledgeable of energy technology, policy, and finance.

  • We are an interdisciplinary group that seeks to learn and discuss energy technology, policy, and finance - from introductory to advanced levels. Most of our members study engineering and finance. A considerable number of students are in the geosciences, sustainability studies, liberal arts, public policy, journalism, and law. The membership is about 60% undergraduate students and 40% graduate students.

  • Supported by the University of Texas Energy Institute, our club is hosting over 20 events in AY 2025-26 that range from small discussions like our Energy Briefings, to social get-togethers with professionals like our Green Futures Forum, to premier events with hundreds of attendees like Texas Energy Innovation Night.

Our events take the form of career workshops, policy discussions, monthly news briefings, and professional development symposia that are beneficial to our student members as well as our club partners. Each year, our programming reaches over 2,000 students, connecting them directly with corporate leaders, major research institutions, cutting-edge startups, and both state and federal agencies.
