AY 2024-25 IN REVIEW

The Longhorn Energy Club wrapped a fantastic year with 7 club events and 2 premier events (EnergizeUT and Energy Week)! Overall, our events cumulatively obtained over 400 attendees across six colleges at UT. The LEC also launched a successful “Energize Finals Week” campaign in the fall and spring semesters to promote the energy scene on-campus through energy drinks. We collaborated with multiple student organizations across campus throughout the year, including the Switch Energy Club, TEX-E, American Nuclear Society, Energy Resource Group, Texas Venture Group, and Student Energy Engagement Council to build a better energy ecosystem for students at UT Austin.

Lucid Motors

Lucid Motors is a luxury electric vehicle manufacturer producing some of the most efficient electric vehicles on the market. In collaboration with the LEC and the Switch Energy Club, they presented to a conference room of 50+ students, in majors ranging from mechanical engineering to economics!

Base Power

HDR, Inc.

Experts from HDR came to LEC to speak about the future of the energy sector in the US, with a special focus on the challenges and opportunities of the electricity grid.

EPA Meet and Greet

The LEC, in coordination with the LBJ School of Public Affairs, spoke with Zealan Hoover - former Senior Advisor to the EPA Administrator - in a short fireside chat led by the LEC’s own Samuel Mercer on administrative law related to the implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act.

Policy On the Rocks

The LEC’s own Cameron Andrews spoke on a panel with state policymakers, legislative aides, and academics about careers in energy policy!

Google

Google’s Chris Matos visited UT in January to present Google’s approach to addressing the new power needs associated with data centers, particularly with the onset of AI. Google is partnering with energy providers like Kairos (nuclear) and Fervo (geothermal) to ensure as much of their energy demand is met by clean energy as possible.

Fervo Energy

February 2025 saw Fervo Energy, an early leader in the burgeoning geothermal industry, host a panel event along with LEC, featuring (left to right) Kyle Gabb, Asset Manager at Fervo, Gustavo Torres, Fervo’s VP of General Counsel, and Kareem El-Sadi, Drilling Engineering Lead. The panel was moderated by UT’s own Ken Wisian, Geophysics PhD and Associate Director at our Bureau of Economic Geology. Each Fervo panel member is a graduate from one of the schools at UT!
